I am a pastor who became the IT department.
Not on purpose. I came to South Fellowship in 2013 as Creative Arts Pastor, and over the years the technology questions kept landing on my desk because I was the one who would actually answer them. Eventually that became the job: I own the full technology function for the church, from staff support and procurement to systems administration and vendor management.
What I found out along the way is that the hard part of technology is almost never the technology. It is the conversation with the person who does the work, the one where you figure out what is actually slowing them down. That conversation is the service.
Since 2023 I have been putting AI to work on real operational problems, first inside the church and then for clients in the nonprofit, legal, software, and trades sectors. I audited every software subscription the church pays for against actual card spend and turned it into a governance one-sheeter that went into our board onboarding materials. I built a daily sync that drops card transactions into a departmental spending ledger. I rebuilt the email architecture for a 13,500-contact nonprofit audience and ran the full re-permissions campaign. None of that is impressive on its own. What matters is that staff are still using all of it.
I also still direct weekly live production across two Sunday services, engineered and maintain a 72-panel LED video wall and the DMX stage lighting, and shoot and edit video end to end. I lead the worship and production team, including a residency program developing the next generation of staff leaders.
I am not leaving the pastorate. I consult because the organizations I most want to help are the ones least likely to get good technology advice: small teams with real missions, limited budget, and nobody on staff who can evaluate a proposal. I would rather be the person who tells you the honest answer, including when the honest answer is that you do not need me.
